Epic Classics - 'Scenes from the Bible', Art by Gustave Doré
Hello, hello!
Hope everyone had a lovely summer (or winter, depending on where you are).
We actually had some quite hot days here in the UK, which made a nice change.
Anyway, back to blogging…
I can’t remember – story of my life! – where I first saw this book by Arcturus, part of their Epic Classics collection, with the other three books being ‘Paradise Lost’, ‘The Divine Comedy’, and ‘Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination’.
Three are illustrated by Gustave Doré and the illustrator for the Poe book is Harry Clarke.
After a somewhat futile search online trying to see what the interior of the book was like, sometime later I found this video by ‘Tristan and the Classics’ where he reviewed them and did a quick flick-through of each book.
My goodness! I was blown away.
I could not believe how beautiful each book is especially considering the extremely affordable price point for the hardbacks.
After some dithering, I decided to get ‘Scenes from the Bible’ first (I paid just over £18, but the price at the moment of posting this is £13.80).
Each page features a passage from a book of the Bible accompanied with corresponding art by Gustave Doré.
The quality of the book is just lovely, from the colour chosen for the cover and the inside, a beautiful shade of blue with the yellowish hue around Jesus almost glowing, to the quality of the paper itself and the clarity of each of Doré’s artwork.
