This Day in History - D-Day Landings

Approaching Omaha Beach (W.Commons)

On the 6th of June 1944, the Allied forces launched Operation Neptune, or D-Day.

Part of Operation Overlord, the Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history, and signalled the start of the liberation of France, eventually leading to Allied victory on the Western Front.

As it’s been quite busy at work, I haven’t had time to do the research I love to do, so I’m going to cheat and link to Sabaton’s Historic Calendar page about the D-Day Landings.

Their song, ‘Primo Victoria’, with its powerful chorus, is about the D-Day Landings::
Through the gates of hell
As we make our way to heaven
Through the Nazi lines
Primo Victoria

On the 6th of June
On the shores of Western Europe 1944
D-day upon us…
