For the past 18 months … actually, for most of the past 15 years, but definitely for the past 18 months, I’ve made a conscious effort to work through and overcome negative thoughts and feelings - you know the ones, believing you’re ‘not enough’, putting yourself down for every single thing that goes wrong, big or small … all tied to low self-esteem.
Part of what’s helped me is to read and surround myself with uplifting quotes. To begin with, they were just words that didn’t really mean anything; I’d say them without much belief. But gradually I started to see the truth in them.
I’d like to share a selection. If anyone is going through a tough time, or just wanting a ‘pick-me-up’, hopefully you’ll find these as helpful as I did.
‘Know thyself. Accept thyself. Love thyself. No matter what you have done, where you have been, know, accept, and love who you are’ ~ Iyanla Vanzant
‘Make peace with yourself, and both heaven and earth will make peace with you’ ~ Isaac of Nineveh
‘You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength’ ~ Marcus Aurelius
‘See if you can catch yourself complaining, in either speech or thought, about a situation you find yourself in, what other people do or say, your surroundings, your life situation, even the weather. To complain is always non-acceptance of what is. It invariably carries an unconscious negative charge. When you complain, you make yourself a victim. Leave the situation or accept it. All else is madness’ ~ Eckhart Tolle
‘There are some people who always seem angry and continuously look for conflict. Walk away; the battle they are fighting isn’t with you, it is with themselves’ ~ Unknown
‘Your happiness depends upon your very own thoughts. No one else can think your thoughts for you. Deliberately think thoughts of what you want because they’re the thoughts that make you happy’ ~ Rhonda Byrne
‘Some changes look negative on the surface, but you will soon realise that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge’ ~ Eckhart Tolle
‘You only have control over three things in your life – the thoughts you think, the images you visualise, and the actions you take’ ~ Jack Canfield
‘Let go of the people who dull your shine, poison your spirit, and bring you drama. Cancel your subscription to their issues’ ~ Steve Maraboli
‘You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think’ ~ AA Milne
(Apart from the last picture - obviously - the others are mine)
